Il Re degli Elfi (Erlkönig) è il titolo di una ballata dello scrittore romantico tedesco Goethe, scritta nel 1782 e ispirata a una leggenda scandinava. Lo stesso testo è stato musicato da uno Schubert diciottenne nel 1815, diventando uno dei suoi lied più conosciuti e drammaticamente intensi.

La storia racconta di un padre che cavalca nella notte con il suo bambino, il quale è terrorizzato dalla presenza e dalle lusinghe, inizialmente solo in quietanti, poi sempre più minacciose, del Re degli Elfi, un essere soprannaturale.

Il padre non lo sente e cerca di rassicurare il bambino dicendogli che ciò che sente sono solo i rumori delle foglie e il soffiare del vento.

Nonostante ciò il richiamo del Re degli Elfi si fa sempre più forte e Il terrore del bambino cresce sempre di più. Al termine della cavalcata il padre raggiunge la sua casa ma il bambino è morto tra le sue braccia.

The Elf King (Erlkönig) is the title of a ballad by German Romantic writer Goethe, written in 1782 and inspired by a Scandinavian legend. The same text was set to music by an 18-year-old Schubert in 1815, becoming one of his best-known and most dramatically intense Lied.

The story tells of a father riding through the night with his child, who is terrified by the presence and flattery, at first only disquieting, then increasingly threatening, of the Elf King, a supernatural being.

The father does not hear him and tries to reassure the child by telling him that what he hears are only the sounds of leaves and the blowing of the wind.

Despite this, the call of the Elf King grows louder and louder, and the child's terror grows more and more. At the end of the ride, the father reaches his home but the child is dead in his arms.
